Lifeguarding or Lifesaving?
Lifeguarding is the technical term for anybody employed to provide lifeguard services at a swimming pool or beach. Lifeguards have a legal obligation to assist in an emergency and leave themselves open to severe legal repercussions if they do not assist. Lifeguards do not necessarily have to be paid employees but could work voluntarily at a local school or swim club. In the legal sense an employee is anybody who is given the task of providing the service of a lifeguard.
Lifesaving is the technical term for anybody who stops to assist at an emergency but is not an employee or volunteer. This usually means that the person is one of the first people on the scene of an emergency. Lifesavers do not have to assist at an emergency and would never be expected to assist where helping would put themselves at risk. Lifesavers differ from lifeguards in the respect that they only have a moral obligation to assist as compared to a lifeguards legal one.
